This week is Herbal Medicine Week (22-29 October).
Plants have been used for healing purposes throughout human history and forms the origin of modern medicine.
Modern Western herbal medicine emphasises the effects of herbs on the whole body and individual body systems.
Herbal medicine practitioners aim to treat the underlying cause of disease and may prescribe herbs, singly or in combination with other herbal medicines as a formula, aimed at correcting patterns of dysfunction rather than targeting the presenting symptoms.
Herbs may be utilised for their properties, such as:
- anti-inflammatory
- haemostatic
- cholesterol lowering
- expectorant
- antispasmodic
- immunomodulation
- among numerous other properties
